Urban Hike - Lea Valley, Hackney Marsh and Walthamstow Marshes
This eco tour takes you through one of the largest and most diverse green spaces in London. The Lea Valley is known by ecologists as “the green lungs of London”, when paired with the neighbouring Hackney Marsh it means you can walk for around 5 miles in parts, through green space and nature reserves without having to cross a road. On this route we take the Hertford Union Canal towpath to get there, making this an 8.5m/ 13.75k urban hike through London which runs almost uninterrupted through green space.
Walthamstow marshes is noted for its unique habitat which is very diverse and productive. Kestrels and sparrow hawks are a common site overhead and the marsh supports the endangered great crested newt amongst other species.
It's all accessible by oyster and the start point for this walk – London Fields Station, is only 7 minutes out of Liverpool Street! The return journey to Liverpool Street from Walthamstow is also just 17minutes. We'll be doing this nonstop as one walk, straight though, and finishing at a great pub in Walthamstow Village, where we will, as always, have that very well earned drink and pub meal at the end.
